NEXT PUBLIC MEETING: May 1 , 7:30 p.m. at Pohick Regional Library. All are welcome.

Silas buys his first human

Silas Burke purchases an enslaved person named Silvia from the estate of a man named Richard Simpson. The transaction was recorded in court by the estate’s executor on May 25, 1826, although it actually took place years earlier. (Archivists say delayed reporting was common.)

Silvia, then, was Silas Burke’s earliest documented human purchase. Since he paid no property tax on her, it’s likely either that he sold her or she died later in the same year.

Take me back to the document library.
